suzuki gsx-r1000 superpowers

The bars go light in my hands. One minute, the Suzuki is a tightly packed projectile of just-about-contained violence. The next instant, the rear tyre is pointed at the scenery, the front wheel is straight but not entirely in touch with the tarmac. I’d love to tell you what I was thinking at the time, but I’m discovering that I can’t think as fast as the Suzuki can bite off a careless hand. Thankfully, the metal plate we just passed over – a typically Mumbai solution to a plethora of road problems is to lay flat, thick metal plates over it – runs out and grippy tarmac seems to settle the rear. The snap of the wheels getting back in line causes me to open the throttle suddenly, and in the next frightening instant the Suzuki rockets forward like a barely aimed shotgun pellet. The baritone roar gains an alien ferocity as the buildings on both sides begin to rush by fast enough to appear as one, continuous grey wall. Living with this much power cannot be easy. And we’re going to find out just how easy it isn’t.

Welcome, then, to a near-400 bhp morning. Yup, that’s two 2007 Suzuki GSX-R1000s, each making 185 bhp in factory trim at the crank – motorcycles at the very cutting edge of street-going two-wheel tech. And then Prasad Divadkar (copper/black) and Vivek Jaising (traditional Suzuki colours) went to work on them. Neither likes it stock, and neither has held back. Their motorcycles, then, are the spiritual equivalents of a privately owned military Hummer. Devastatingly potent, but used to generate laughs rather than turn their enemies into erstwhile foes.

So the copper/black Gixxer wears super light wheels, while the other one has stock wheels, but in lovely chrome.  Both have loud, loud, loud cans, power commanders to take full advantage of the pipes, and Jaising’s even got a quickshifter added. There’s so many bits and bobs in there that more than once on this glorious, earsplitting morning, I found myself asking the duo whether that normal looking part was, in fact, stock. The answer, as it turns out, was no. In this state, both bikes are close to 195 bhp at the crank, and I can tell you one thing. Think of the best way to liven up a muggy, warm morning, and you won’t even come close to this – two vocal GSX-R1000s.Instead of heading out onto the highway to figure out the motorcycles, we chose to head into the heart of Mumbai this time. The sound  ricocheting off the surrounding urbana was incredible. It was almost as if the bikes had their own captive audience, which was always clapping appreciatively. The superbike soundtrack was a shoo-in for a multiple platinum, and this, really, I could live with. Even if my neighbours couldn’t.

the big h highsung

Reincarnation has always been a hot topic with us Indians, no? However, when it comes to motorcycles, the concept of reincarnation hasn’t really worked in India. You’d have better chances of bringing back the dodo than motorcycles that have kicked the parts bin... er, bucket. Like the Comet streetbike and the Aquila cruiser. Which is why Hyosung’s comeback with Garware Motors as their partner is all the more important.
So what we have here are the Hyosung GT650R and the ST7, Hyosung’s twin hopes of a successful re-entry into the Indian motorcycle market. These will be followed by other models as well, but more on that later. For now, the first impressions of these two motorcycles are impressive. The GT650R is what I was naturally inclined to and I must say I liked what I saw. It’s just the right size - a full-size motorcycle without being too imposing or unwieldy. Thanks to the fairing, the substantial tank, the swoopy tail section, the upswept exhaust and the chunky rubber, the proportions are near-perfect too. What I can’t make up my mind about is that Ducati 999-, MV Agusta F4esque front end styling, though I do appreciate the fact that at least it’s not a safe and conventional design. On the whole, it does look tempting enough for a sportsbike nut.

THE ZERO S ELECTRIC POWERED MOTOR CYCLE

The range is a quite reasonable 60 miles, so this machine can be used for almost all your daily travel needs on a single charge. The battery takes four hours to charge fully, so it is conceivable that you could plug it in at work and have it fully charged by lunch time. It plugs into
Due to the low price of electricity compared to gasoline, the maker of the Zero S says it could travel from Los Angeles to New York on $30 of electricity. That's pretty cheap, but you'd need to stop many times on the way to recharge.
Street Legal
Zero has had off road high performance electric motorbikes available for a while now, but the Zero S is the first fully street legal electric bike with this kind of performance.
Silent Speed
The motorcycle is given its name from both the emissions and the noise it makes: Zero in both cases. For trail bike riding in the great outdoors, these are definitely a huge advantage. However having been in a couple of motorcycle accidents myself, I find the louder a bike is, the safer the rider.
Made In America
These bikes are made in the United States, and the batteries come from Canada. So if you're looking for a new bike or a cheaper alternative to a new electric car, this could be a great choice. Just make sure you have all your safety gear.
The street version will cost under $10,000, and the off-road version, the Zero X, costs under $7,500. The actual price may vary from these estimates.

WORLD SMALLEST MOTOR BIKE

In 2003, Tom Wiberg from Sweden built a motorcycle with a front wheel diameter of 16 mm (0.62 inches) and a rear wheel diameter of 22 mm (0.86 inches). He rode it for more than 10 m (32.8 feet) in Hökerum, Sweden. The motorcycle has a wheelbase of 80 mm (3.14 inches), a seat height of 65 mm (2.55 inches), weighs 1.1 kg (2.4 lbs). It powered to a top speed of 2 km/h (1.24 mph) by its 0.22 kW (0.3 hp) engine. In my opinion, this was built by the designer just to obtain the Guinness World Record for the World’s Smallest Motorcycle.

Ducati Multistrada 1200S "Pikes Peak" Special Edition Coming In May

Ducati unveils the Multistrada 1200 S Pikes Peak Special Edition in celebration of Greg Tracy’s famous victory in the 2010 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb race in Colorado. The Special Edition underlines the race-bred heritage that exists deep inside every Ducati and follows a massive first year success for the award-winning Multistrada 1200, which set a new industry benchmark in motorcycle technology with the four-bikes-in-one concept.

The Pikes Peak Special Edition is specially dressed in stunning replica Ducati Corse-style paint scheme with passenger foot-peg hangers and engine guard anodised in black finish and sport red pin-striping on the wheels. In addition to the original equipment silencer and screen the Pikes Peak Special Edition arrives with an EU approved Ducati Performance carbon fibre silencer by Termignoni and a race-derived low screen in carbon fibre. A Ducati Performance carbon fibre front mudguard, and custom made seat detailed with red stitching complete an enhanced specification well worthy of a race-winning replica.

Winning the highly challenging and multi-surface Pikes Peak race, which climbs a mountain track through 1,438 metres of altitude change, further underlined the exceptional all-terrains versatility of the Ducati Multistrada by demonstrating how its four different Riding Modes immediately adapt the motorcycle to any environment. Sport, Touring, Urban and Enduro Riding Modes are made selectable by the simple click of a button, instantly transforming the Multistrada’s suspension, power output and traction control settings electronically, a feature that Greg Tracy will use again in 2011.

In conjunction with the launch of this striking new model, Ducati is pleased to announce its entry in the 2011 Pikes Peak event, featuring last year’s winning line-up of Greg Tracy and Alexander Smith. Preparations are already underway for the title defence in June, when Ducati will be fighting for the fastest time up the mountain.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, or “Race to the Clouds”, is situated in a range of the Rocky Mountains, 16km west of Colorado Springs and races 20km from a start line altitude of 2,862 metres to a finish line at 4,300. First held in 1916, the event is now on the international calendar of the FIA in addition to holding seven motorcycle categories from 250-1200cc.

Hero plans to bring light, carbon fibre bikes to India

Hero Cycles, part of the Hero group, is planning to bring a premium range of carbon fibre bikes to India.

“The carbon fibre is usually used in the A380 and will be brought from Italy. This is part of the plan to offer new products and will be the first-of-its-kind in the country," Pankaj Munjal, managing director of Hero Cycles, said.

The market is growing at a rate of 11-12%. “At present, the market stands at 11 million cycles annually, of which our company enjoys a 50% share,” he said. Munjal was in Pune to promote the Pune edition of the Hero Cycles India Cyclothon, slated to be held on February 27. The cyclothon, , in which 5,500 participants are expected to participate, aims to reinforce a cycling momentum in the city.

Ben Handford named new Bikes, Blues and BBQ president and CEO | Community Announcement

Ben Handford will serve in the newly created position of President and CEO, and Joe Giles has been named the Executive Director.

“Over the last eleven years, Bikes, Blues & BBQ has evolved from a small gathering of motorcycle enthusiasts on Dickson Street to a “festival” encompassing the largest “family-friendly, charitable funding” rally in the United States. As a result of this growth, BBB was able to give over $150,000 in cash, partnership and in-kind support to charities in 2010 alone,” said Kenneth Mourton, chairman of BBB.

“Recognizing the expansion and addition of venues will continue (Dickson Street, Baum Stadium and Washington County Fairgrounds), the significant economic impact the event has on Northwest Arkansas and the state, and the knowledge the funds generated by BBB are crucial to the many charitable organizations we support, the board of directors determined that the time is right to hire a new level of professional leadership,” said Mourton.

“As a result, Ben Handford has been named our first President and CEO. He will focus on working with our many state and local stakeholders, as well as working with current sponsors and developing new ones so the event can remain self-funding. Ben will also work with the Executive Director and the many volunteer coordinators to ensure that the event is a success for everyone involved,” stated Mourton.

Handford is a native Arkansan who brings to BBB a tremendous amount of experience in the areas of strategic event planning, operational logistics and group management. He has worked for the White House, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the U.S. Small Business Administration, and two presidential campaigns. “Ben’s experience makes him uniquely qualified to take BBB into the future,” Mourton added.

Working with Handford on the day-to-day operations as the Executive Director of BBB will be Joe Giles. “Joe has been involved in every aspect of the rally over the last six years and brings not only tremendous organization and team development skills, but also a connection to the Northwest Arkansas community that will be invaluable in assisting Ben in building for the future,” said Jeff Koenig, board member and head of the search committee. “His eclectic background as a radio announcer, school teacher, elementary school principal and professional musician, and his range of experiences make him a great choice for this role,” added Koenig.

Horex – is the crazy VR6 just a start? Read more: http://www.visordown.com/motorcycle-news-new-bikes/horex--is-the-crazy-vr6-just-a-start/17172.html#ixzz1Dn9TlVsF

OF all the new bikes launched last year the supercharged Horex VR6 – complete with its unique narrow-angle V6 engine – was certainly the most ambitious. But its creators might have something even more insane up their sleeves.

The original patents for the Horex, filed several years ago by its designer Clemens Neese, include not only a bike that closely resembles the layout of the production VR6 but a second machine using an even bigger, W8 engine.

That's right, a W8. Basically, it's two narrow-angle V4s (where the four cylinders, despite their vee configuration, share a single cylinder head) bolted together onto a common crankshaft. The resulting motor is around the size as a conventional V4, but actually has eight cylinders.

Mounted longitudinally, with the cylinders poking out like a Moto Guzzi – or perhaps more accurately like the ill-fated Morbidelli V8 – the massive engine drives the rear wheel via a shaft, suggesting it's designed more as a tourer than a sports bike. The patent documents claim the motor would have a 60.6mm bore and 65mm stroke, giving a capacity of 1500cc.

Weekend motorcycle show has the latest models and free dirt bike rides for kids

I think people should take safety courses before they ride because you never know when you could run into rain or obstacles like a couch in the middle of the road," Canada's Road Queen Heather Ireland said yesterday.

Ireland, who has been riding since she was a kid and now travels across the country as host of Biker TV, is in Moncton this weekend as a celebrity guest at the Atlantic Motorcycle and ATV Show at the Coliseum. She will be on hand today and tomorrow to greet fans, speak about her experiences and show highlights of Biker TV's coverage of New Brunswick's Atlanticade Motorcycle Festival in St. Andrews.

The show opened yesterday and continues today from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and students. It is one of the largest shows of its kind in Canada and becomes a showcase for new bikes, four-wheelers, accessories, aftermarket parts, clothing, riding gear and motorcycle festivals being held around the Maritimes.

Ireland says she once had to swerve and avoid a couch that fell off a truck on a highway outside of Toronto. She made it safely, but still shudders a bit when she talks about a horrendous crash she had on the Trans-Canada Highway near Edmundston in the fall of 2007. She clipped another bike while swerving around a transport truck and the big Harley-Davidson she was riding went into a slide before flipping end-over-end. Ireland walked away from the crash with a broken collarbone that still hurts some days.

"I'm still traumatized about it and have visions of the bike and all my belongings scattered all over the road, but I would never consider not getting back on a bike. It's my therapy, it's my life."

Clinton Smout, a motorcycle safety expert who has trained thousands of riders (including a blind child) at his schools in Ontario, says children should be taught to ride early.

He says children learn quickly and often catch the motorcycle "bug" and remain riders for life. Smout says all-terrain vehicles have gotten a bad reputation for being unsafe because people who ride them aren't properly trained or prepared.

He also advocates children should only ride machines they are big enough to handle, because part of riding a four-wheeler is knowing how to move your body and shift your weight to control the machine.

Over the weekend, Smout will be offering free rides on Yamaha mini dirt bikes at the Coliseum. Helmets, boots and other safety gear are provided and kids can try out the machines after a short introductory course.

Those who are interested in motorcycle safety courses can sign up at the Safety Services New Brunswick (www.ssnb.ca) booth and receive a discount of $50. The courses are usually $430 and are held throughout the season at 11 sites in New Brunswick and P.E.I. Motorcycles are provided and the courses cover an entire weekend.

For motorcycle fans, the show is a place to bump into old friends and see the latest machines. One hot-looking machine that making its debut appearance in Atlantic Canada is the 2011 Ducati Diavel, which is known as the "Carbon Dart." Sales consultant Shane Scott said this futuristic-looking machine delivers 162 horsepower to a lightweight frame and body that uses a lot of carbon fiber. It also uses many features developed on the race track like an antilock braking system, traction control and a slip clutch transmission that allows the rider to downshift without using the clutch.

The Diavel has a pricetag in the $19,000 range.

Over at the massive Harley-Davidson display, fans can look over the selection of Sportsters, Street Glides and Road Glide machines. Consultant Josh Cormier says entry-level Harleys start around $10,000 for a Sportster and rise up through the ranks to over $40,000. One of the big attractions this year is the Road Glide Ultra, which comes complete with luggage carriers, heated seats, back support, stereo system, floating anti-vibration footrests and other luxury items. The Harley booth also has a fit shop, a bike display where prospective customers can choose from a selection of different handlebars and seats to find the most comfortable combination.

Motorcycle fans will find machines of all sizes at the show, from tiny 50-cc dirt bikes all the way up to big highway cruisers.

You can also find things like the eight-wheeled Argo amphibious vehicle, four-wheeled all-terrain vehicles and even a couple of snowmobiles.

The big door prize this year is a track kit for an ATV from G. Bourque in Moncton. Entry-level riders might have a look at the 50-cc scooters that can be ridden without a motorcycle licence. And people with an eye for nostalgia might like the vintage-looking Triumphs or the Royal Enfields, new bikes built to look like bikes from the 1940s and '50s.

There's also a wide selection of leather goods, helmets, jackets, boots and other accessories, along with information on upcoming events. One event that is drawing attention is Moto Moncton, a new motorcycle festival for Moncton that will be held the weekend of Aug. 19-29.

Although complete details have not been released, they say it will include a downtown street party, live music by local bands, motorcycle stunt shows, a burnout competition and daily touring rides. The festival is a co-operative effort between the City of Moncton, local dealers and volunteers.

* The Atlantic Motorcycle and ATV Show will be open at the Moncton Coliseum today from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors.
