Ducati Multistrada 1200S "Pikes Peak" Special Edition Coming In May

Ducati unveils the Multistrada 1200 S Pikes Peak Special Edition in celebration of Greg Tracy’s famous victory in the 2010 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb race in Colorado. The Special Edition underlines the race-bred heritage that exists deep inside every Ducati and follows a massive first year success for the award-winning Multistrada 1200, which set a new industry benchmark in motorcycle technology with the four-bikes-in-one concept.

The Pikes Peak Special Edition is specially dressed in stunning replica Ducati Corse-style paint scheme with passenger foot-peg hangers and engine guard anodised in black finish and sport red pin-striping on the wheels. In addition to the original equipment silencer and screen the Pikes Peak Special Edition arrives with an EU approved Ducati Performance carbon fibre silencer by Termignoni and a race-derived low screen in carbon fibre. A Ducati Performance carbon fibre front mudguard, and custom made seat detailed with red stitching complete an enhanced specification well worthy of a race-winning replica.

Winning the highly challenging and multi-surface Pikes Peak race, which climbs a mountain track through 1,438 metres of altitude change, further underlined the exceptional all-terrains versatility of the Ducati Multistrada by demonstrating how its four different Riding Modes immediately adapt the motorcycle to any environment. Sport, Touring, Urban and Enduro Riding Modes are made selectable by the simple click of a button, instantly transforming the Multistrada’s suspension, power output and traction control settings electronically, a feature that Greg Tracy will use again in 2011.

In conjunction with the launch of this striking new model, Ducati is pleased to announce its entry in the 2011 Pikes Peak event, featuring last year’s winning line-up of Greg Tracy and Alexander Smith. Preparations are already underway for the title defence in June, when Ducati will be fighting for the fastest time up the mountain.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, or “Race to the Clouds”, is situated in a range of the Rocky Mountains, 16km west of Colorado Springs and races 20km from a start line altitude of 2,862 metres to a finish line at 4,300. First held in 1916, the event is now on the international calendar of the FIA in addition to holding seven motorcycle categories from 250-1200cc.

 The motorcycle segment in the period has grown by 23.57 per cent to 9.7 million units.

Yamaha, which has 13 models in its portfolio in India, is targeting having 10 per cent share of the two-wheeler market over the next three to four years.

The company's current market share stands at 3.5 per cent. To this end, the company has launched six products in the 150 cc segment and is looking at attaining 20 per cent share in the category in the course of the year.

"We are going to introduce top-end products in India and then work our way down the pyramid to lower segments. Our products are known for their technology and now we are seeing demand for 150 cc bikes even from the B and C category towns," said Kurian

An electric scooter may also be launched for India in due course.

Additionally, the company is also considering introducing two new motorbikes in India in the course of the year, which may include possible upgrades.

Kurian added, "We want to consolidate our position in the market here. We sold 250,000 units in India last year.

"This year, we expect to grow by at least 50 per cent and then double the growth rates recorded by the overall two-wheeler industry in the country."

India Yamaha Motors India is gearing up to foray into the fast growing scooter segment in the country with an all-new product that parent Yamaha Motor Corporation is developing specifically for the Indian market.

Roy Kurian, national business head, India Yamaha Motors, said, "We were studying the Indian market intensively over the last two years to gauge the requirements of customers here.

"We decided we needed a new product for the consumers here. A product is in development at our R&D centre in Japan, which would be introduced shortly.
